Emerging Technologies and Education

The Lemur is a new hands on technology that allows people to create interfaces on their own and be able to maneuver the objects or programs they design with the use of their hands. There is no limit on how many objects you may make as long as you can control them with at least one of your fingers. For education, this new technology, pad-like structure a student may be given the task of creating an interactive module for, say in a health enhancement class, where students need to give a pre-unit presentation on basketball. They would be able to use this technology to create basketballs and dribble them, shoot them, and do other drills with them as a precursor so the students would be able to see what the end result was going to look like. Or, you could create a bat and ball and they could practice with hitting the ball at different angles and see where the ball goes. Although this is possible by using the real equipment, you can’t always get the right pitch and this program could help with that. In History, the students could create a person and distant land and traverse this landscape as a virtual-like tour that they might not otherwise get to do.

This sounds like a very useful technology; it is something that will probably catch students' interest and keep their attention. I like your idea of how to use this in a health enhancement class. Students who may not be very talented athletically would have a good opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the activities without the added pressure of playing a basketball or baseball game in class. The history class activity also sounds like a lot of fun. It is wonderful to give kids opportunities through technology that they wouldn't have otherwise.
