Nikole D, Indian Ed BLog

Indian Education is quite an interesting topic with a variety of different avenues of knowledge. I found that he boarding school presentation was quite interesting to learn about. It is disheartening to know what happened, and reflect on our country's past history. Although it is not always the most "warm and fuzzy" topic, it is critical to understand what actually happened. A boarding school lesson would be appropriate for high school students, but I do not think that elementary primary students should be introduced to the topic at such an early age.

I thought the presentations were great, and I still remember the video of the origin of many 'modern' tribe names, particularly that they do not always match up with what would be considered a correct translation of their own native names. (Nez Perce... etc.) This concept of a universal sign language is also pretty interesting; I hadn't realized that it existed before white settlers came through. My ideas for including students often revolve around language, as it is practically the basis of culture. I used to give tours in a wildlife center, and when a school from the reservation would come through I would often try to give them as much of an opportunity for using their own language. (Mato for the grizzly bear... etc.) Aside from that, the best idea that is out there is giving Native students a choice of how to incorporate their culture, if at all. There are occasions where they may wish not to, and it's very important to be sensitive to this.
