Although distance education (taking classess online, etc.) has been in existence for quite some time, the state of Texas is attempting to do something different with this concept. They are trying to use distance education to help people in rural areas with health education. This would include elementary and high school health classes all the way up to college and medical school level classes. There is great potential in expanding distance education beyond college classes. Imagine what students could gain if they had a way to communicate and learn valuable skills from people who lived far away. The people who would especially benefit from this are those living in remote areas; even if there are just a few computers with internet access in a school or town, the rewards could be endless.
Web conferencing is another newer technology to pay attention to. This type of technology has been in use on college campuses for some time now, but it is not often used in elementary or secondary schools. People in rural areas could benefit from this technology, as well. Students would be able to meet with experts, share ideas with more people, and even take classes online. No longer should these technologies simply be used in colleges. Many students could benefit from these technologies, as they could communicate with people who are further away more efficiently.
